New Format For Newsletter
For a few years now our Chapter newsletter, the Link Up, has been written by the volunteer editor (currently, Kathy Malmfeldt) and the layout and graphic design have been provided by Judy Kosterman (Thanks, Judy!).  With this issue, we are trying out the newsletter format of Constant Contact, our provider for the email blasts we send to notify or remind our members of upcoming events.  The change is being made in order to provide more frequent and more timely issues, tied in with the news column on our website home page and the email blasts.  We hope you like it!

Tomi, Tracey, Judy & Karen -- Off to Nashville!

The Southern California and Desert Southwest District Semi-Finals of the EWGA Championship Series were held June 9th at the Double Tree Golf Resort in San Diego.  The Los Angeles Chapter fielded a full team of 14 competitors:

Championship Flight - Tomi Spor and Tracey Hebert
First Flight - Socorro Cottle and Michelle Allman
Second Flight - Teri Esteban and Sharon Wertz
Third Flight - Judy Wu and Maura Collins
Fourth Flight - Michelle Haag and Chris Devine Dailey
Scramble Team - Jayne Geisler, Cecilia Worcester, Karen Krull and Chris Brugman

Our very own Tomi Spor is the Southern California-Desert SW Champion!  She won first place in the Championship Flight and is on her way to the EWGA Finals in Nashville, Tennessee.    Joining Tomi are: Tracey Hebert, Championship Flight Low Net winner (first place) and Judy Wu, Third Flight Los Gross winner (first place).

The following members also placed in the top three in both low gross and net in their respective flights:

Teri Esteban - Second place Low Net Second Flight winner
Maura Collins - Second place Low Gross Third Flight winner

Karen Katzbeck, our defending 2006 National winner (Third Flight), will be joined by Tomi, Tracey and Judy at the Hermitage Golf Course in Nashville for the two-day EWGA Final Championship tournament on September 7th and 8th.

We wish Karen, Tomi, Tracey and Judy lots of fun and pars in Nashville.  Please don't be shy to ask these 15 members of their experience in San Diego and wish those competing in Nashville an "LA" good time. (Karen participated as an exempt player as she has automatically qualified to compete in Nashville - a wonderful benefit for the winners at the finals each year).

On behalf of our members, The Board of Directors wishes to thank each and every one of you who competed in the Semi-Finals in San Diego for representing the Chapter.

We're all very proud of you!  Complete Results

REGISTRATION DEADLINE:  July 6, 2007 - Space is limited to 24 players from each Chapter, so sign up early!

HISTORY OF OUR EVENT:  The LPGA's Solheim Cup is a three-day, three-format competition played by the Europeans against the Americans, with match play, better ball, and alternate shot rounds. In 2005 and 2006, our event mirrored that format, with each competitor playing two of the three formats. In 2007, we've simplified the format and we'll all play alternate shot. Then in 2008, we'll all play better ball, and then back to match play in 2009. This way, we'll be doing what the pros do in a three-day weekend, over the course of three years!

HANDICAPS AND PAIRINGS: Players from each Chapter will be paired in order of handicap index, based on their July indexes, and a course handicap determined for each player. Based on USGA Rules, the handicap for each pair of teammates will be the average of their individual handicaps. The number of strokes will be determined by subtracting the team handicaps, and then dividing the difference by 2 and rounding down. Strokes will be given to the team with the highest handicap on the most difficult holes.

It's Vegas Calling...

Pictured are Karen Krull, Maureen Kelly, Cecilia Worcester and Jayne Geisler on the links in Las Vegas.  This 'Vegas 4' originally met through the EWGA and recently spent a week in Las Vegas golfing.  While there were 5 rounds of golf recorded, word on the street is that a few casinos were frequented as well, as paparazzi spotted them in the Tropicana's Poker Room. Jayne won the 4-day International Poley competition and later parlayed those winnings on some ripe video poker machines.  There was also some sophisticated culture mixed in, as the group attended Spamalot & Cirque Du Soleil's Love.  A good time was had by all.

Chapter Elections Upcoming!

Our Chapter Bylaws call for the membership to elect the Chapter Officers consisting of President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary, and for those Officers to appoint the Committee Chairs.

Earlier in June there was a call for nominations for President, Vice-President, and Secretary for our Chapter. Although the deadline for submitting nominations was June 26, 2007, there is still time for you to participate in the Leadership of EWGA L.A. There are several standing committees, which plan, promote and implement the many Chapter events and activities, as well as its governance. Your help is needed to  make things run smoothly. You can join a committee at any time of the year, but this is a good time to think about how you want to volunteer for the year to come. We have the following committees: Events, Membership, Education & Player Development, Leadership, Sponsorship, Communications, Publicity, Handicap, Leagues.

Express your interest to our Leadership Chair, Sharon Wertz, or to the Chair of the specific committee you want to join (see our website).

Golf Events Recap

I-10 Freeway Competition: The second annual I-10 Freeway Series, our inter-Chapter competition with the Desert Cities Chapter, was held on March 24th at the Tahquitz Creek Golf Course in Palm Springs. Los Angeles continued its winning streak, with a 9-2 victory over Desert Cities and got to hold the Cup for another year. 23 players participated in the event which featured the Individual Match Play format, where one player competes against another for the best net score. This event is one of four annual inter-Chapter competitions that we hold throughout the year. We also play Orange County in July, San Diego in September, and Santa Barbara in November. Of the 12 inter-Chapter competitions our club has played since 2001, Los Angeles has won nine of them. For more information about this year's upcoming inter-Chapter events, see the Events page of our website. For more information about the results of past events, see the Members Only page.

9 is Enough, The Lakes: 12 players attended the April 14th event at The Lakes in El Segundo, for 9 holes at this executive course (par 3's & 4's), with 10 staying afterwards for networking. The day started out warm, but grew windy and chilly at the end. The course was in excellent condition, and as usual, the staff was excellent to work with, providing two excellent clinics, long swing and sand bunkers. Maureen Kelly had the fewest putts (17), with Connie Mangam and Gail Garland tying for second with 20 putts each. Barbara Trivison won a $60 gift certificate from the course for closest to the pin and generously gave up her lowest putts award for others to win. Thanks to Mary King for hosting this event!

Malibu: May 6th was the date of this year's Malibu outing, hosted by Barbara Trivison and Nina Guttman. 26 members and 2 guests enjoyed the beautiful but windy day. The course staff was easy to work with and even sent us out 10 minutes early, and with a partial split-tee format (some foursomes starting on #1 and others on #10). Lori Baker won lowest putts (31), and Connie Mangam got a prize for "most honest putter" - highest number. Mary Mondragon won the chip-in pool and Jackie Minnis had the longest drive. Malibu is a demanding but beautiful course, and a favorite for many of our members. Thanks, Barbara & Nina!

9 is Enough, Van Nuys: 14 members and guests played Saturday, May 19, 2007, at Van Nuys Golf Course, a 9-hole executive track. The weather was warm and comfortable, and we were delighted to welcome some of the new members who joined at the April Kickoff, including Tee Tee Meyer, Irene Smith and Jean Rouda. Golf was preceded by a putting clinic. lst Lowest Putts was won by Nina Guttman with 13, and 2nd Lowest Putts was won by Irene Smith (15). Thanks to Nina Guttman for hosting!

Upland Hills: June 6 we tried out a new 18-hole venue, Upland Hills Golf Course hosted by Sandy Markle and Bonnie Wilkes. 27 members and 1 guest participated in the golf and BBQ dinner afterwards. The reviews were mixed: the course was in good shape, and interesting, but there were few markers, and the layout was a little confusing with inadequate signage for newcomers. Due to a shortage of carts, we were delayed in starting by more than an hour, and the pace of play was very slow. The staff was helpful prior to the event, but somewhat disorganized on the day of the event. The wait staff at the buffet were very attentive and pleasant. However, the weather cooperated and we had a relatively mild day for June. Linda Kueny won the longest drive contest, Kathy Jackson took lowest putts with 32, Nina Guttman (#1) and Carol Fishburn (#18) split the chip-in pool, and Maura Collins won a foursome certificate donated by the course.

9 is Enough, Marriott: this Manhattan Beach 9-hole par-3 course was the site for the June 9 outing, hosted by Roberta Kantola. 12 members attended, on a sunny, cool day. The staff was helpful, but the pace was slow. There was a four-way tie for fewest putts, shared by Samanta Laison, Yvonne Godfrey, Nina Guttman, and Roberta Kantola, each with 18. Closest to the Pin was won by Karen White, who also won the drawing. Everyone stayed after for the awards, and 5 continued the day, going out for food.

Ladies First Celebrity Golf Classic The 3rd Annual Ladies First Celebrity Golf Classic, benefiting the Women's Sports Foundation's GoGirlGo Initiative [www.GoGirlGo.com] took place May 18-20, 2007 at the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa and Cimarron Golf Resort.  The Women's Sports Foundation provides opportunities for young girls to enhance their lives through sports and physical activity. EWGA-L.A. member Jennifer Rottenberg was the Tournament Director. EWGA-L.A. members Julie Armstrong, Jennifer Brown, Vickie Camper, Chris Devine-Dailey, Karen Katzbeck, Tomi Spor and Barbara Trivison played in the two-day event, and Debbie Dakouzlian was of great help as a volunteer. Pictured are, from left to right, Kristen Luckenbill [soccer], KLK, Doreen Dower [Retired Navy and currently Catering Manager Qualcomm Stadium], and Radio City Rockette & "The Amazing Race" contestant Kandice Pelletier [first time golfer].

The first day pairings included 2 celebrities and 2 amateurs while the second day pairings sent the celebrities out first followed by the amateurs. The all-female rock quintet, Antigone Rising, and Annie Duke, one of the top professional poker players in the world, provided evening entertainment. LPGA touring professional Andia Winslow hosted a short game skills clinic. Celebrities included ESPN2 commentator and former Purdue basketball coach, Carolyn Peck, Julie Foudy, US Soccer Hall of Fame inductee, Jennie Finch, 2004 Olympic softball gold medalist, Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller, former US Olympic women's ice hockey team captain Cammi Granato, and Aimee Mullins, Paralympics athlete and current President of the Women's Sports Foundation.

Attendee Tomi Spor added: "There were many very special auction items that were laid out for the highest bidder, including autographed Olympic sports paraphernalia that were graciously donated by the celebrities and athletes.  The celebs were very approachable and grateful for our participation and for supporting a cause that was so important to them. The spa and massage were a wonderful treat after the round in the desert heat. We were treated like royalty." Thanks to Jennifer for a very special invitation - one of the many extraordinary benefits we experience due to our EWGA membership.

League Updates

Wednesday Night at Whitsett League has started strong. The first night a record 18 gals showed up, including lots of new members. Edith Apuya was the lucky winner of the $18 pool.

The second week 21 golfers showed up! Christina Kuo recorded her first birdie ever with a nice shot to the green on the 90 yard 9th hole, and then a great 1 putt. Congratulations Christina! Susan Watkins was the winner of the Closest to the Pin pool totaling $21. It pays to play at Whitsett! The pool prize changes weekly it may be Closest to the Pin or lowest putts, or just chance!

Whitsett is a great course for learning, as it is a short, 9-hole par 3, so take advantage of it. If you are a new player and want to be paired with a more experienced player to better understand the rules and etiquette, just let Roberta know. Jan, the starter at Whitsett, is a fan of ours and helps get us out as a group, so be sure to be extra nice to her!
