HOW TO ENHANCE YOUR EWGA EXPERIENCE
Play in an after-work league as often as you can, a great way to meet more members in a non-threatening environment. Bonus: go out to eat with the group after golf.
Sign up early for the monthly 9 is Enough! or 18-hole outing. Get to the course a little early, so that you have time to warm up and get your gear ready and won't feel harried or rushed. Bonus: stay after for snacks & the event wrap-up.
Read the Chapter Newsletter (The Link Up) and the Constant Contact email blasts. They will keep you in touch with what's happening. (Of course, if you don't already do this, you won't be reading this tip!)
Volunteer to help. Serving on a committee, helping out at an event, or being on the Board are all great ways to get to know more members, and the more members you know, the more comfortable you will feel at events.
Let others know your interests. There are subgroups of our members who play poker, go on golf trips, see movies, attend plays, concerts or other sports events together, or share books, recipes, health or beauty tips, etc. These friendships have come about because someone took the initiative to say, "I just read this great book!" or "I'd really like to go see the ___ movie this weekend, anyone else want to go?" or "Anyone know of a good recipe for polenta?"
Find other members to carpool with to events. You'll save gas & have company for the drive.
If you haven't been to one already, attend a New Member Orientation. If you have been to one, offer to host the next one! |

Chapter Elections Upcoming!

Three elected positions are open for the 2007-08 Board, including President, Vice President and Secretary. (Our Treasurer, Karen Katzbeck was elected last year, and serves a two-year term.) The Nominating Committee comprised of Julie Armstrong, Vickie Camper, Teri Esteban, and Roberta Kantola, solicited nominations from members, contacted nominees, and prepared the nomination forms, candidate bios, and election ballots. The final slate of candidates is as follows:
President - Debbie DakouzlianVice President - Julie ArmstrongSecretary - Jennie Redner
Also nominated, but due to time commitments, chose to decline, were Barbara Trivison, Natalie Zifcak and Susan Watkins; we hope they will be able to serve in the near future on a committee or some other position for the Chapter.Sharon Wertz, Leadership Chair 2007 Nominating Committee Chair
Candidate Statement - Debbie DakouzlianTell us about any experience you feel may assist you in your service as our President?
· Vice President - EWGA Los Angeles Chapter (Current) · President - Illinois Women's Soccer League serving 3,500 members· EWGA - Section Championship Tournament Assistant Director for three years serving members in Gilroy, Reno, and San Diego · American Golf Corporation - four years Events Manager (typically known as the Tournament Director) · USGA - Tournament Director's certification· Assistant Area Referee Administrator - AYSO Area 11L - serving 29,000 players
Why you would like to serve as President of the Los Angeles Chapter?
· The first words that come to mind are: "because of the friends I've met through the chapter." These words, often repeated by many, are truly a reflection of our chapter. We are known as "the fun ones" and I'd like to augment the mission of the association for providing women golfers a safe place to learn the rules of the game, and the etiquette of business golf by utilizing the product offerings available for all. · I'd like to present our members the opportunity to serve on the various committees as well as to network professionally and personally but most of all - to continue having fun!
Candidate Statement - Julie Armstrong
Tell us about any experience you feel may assist you in your service as our Vice President?
· I come to EWGA with experience in my professional associations for both nursing and psychology. I have served on the Board of Directors for each at both the local and state levels. I believe it's time to direct my attention to the more pleasurable activities in my life, and that leads me to want to serve as the Vice President for EWGA-LA.· My goals as Vice President are to help our geographically diverse chapter feel more connected. I hope to explore ideas like a carpool to events, and perhaps even a welcome wagon to greet our new members and make them feel more a part of the group right away. I am committed to helping members who are interested in developing their leadership and golf skills.
Candidate Statement - Jennie Redner
As the current Secretary of our Chapter, my preparation of the Minutes takes a project management approach, providing reminders to Board Members about tasks they agree to complete.

Upcoming Golf Events

Sierra Lakes has creeks and lakes along its fairways, however, you also need to be on the watch here for tricky bunkers, rocks and desert brush areas. It's worth the drive - to the end of the 210 Freeway. This course is always fun - huge greens and in good shape. SPORG Online Registration

9 is Enough, Bixby Village Golf Course:
12 members and 2 guests played the July 14th event at Bixby in Long Beach, for 9 holes at this Par 29 executive course (par 3's & 4's). There was a three-way tie for fewest putts (19), with Yvonne Godfrey, Samantha Laison and Gail Garland walking away with the Roger Dunn gift certificates. Thanks to Mary King for hosting this event!
Central Coast Weekend Getaway: This July 13-15 getaway was enjoyed by 16 members of our chapter. Half the group took off early on Friday and played at several locations including La Purisima, Rancho San Marcos and Dairy Creek - which were on the way to Sea Pines Resort where they spent the weekend.
Morro Bay Golf Course was the venue on Saturday morning. Despite dense fog over the first 5 holes - they managed the round without hitting one another!! They also found a great restaurant on the bay for lunch after golf. Several attendees found a farmer's market in Morro Bay in the late afternoon - followed by dinner at a BBQ place near by.
Sunday at Avila Beach GC was clear and sunny. This course did not play along the beach as anticipated - but with every hole a different set up - our gals were challenged by the layout all day. The pro shop and dining area do have a beach view - and all enjoyed lunch after golf watching people enjoying the waves and sand. Attached is a picture of the group (provided by Jennifer Tiner). Several more photos will be on the website soon.
LA Lets it Slip By - The 2007 Solheim CupOur Los Angeles Chapter lost a close inter-chapter match to Orange County on Saturday, July 21st. In the third running of this annual event, Orange County came away with a one point victory 6-5 in a hard-fought match. The competition was held at El Dorado Park Golf Course in Long Beach.

The LPGA's Solheim Cup is a three-day, three-format competition played by the Europeans against the Americans, with match play, better ball, and alternate shot rounds. In 2005 and 2006, our EWGA event mirrored that format, with each competitor playing two of the three formats.
In 2007, we simplified the format and all played alternate shot. In 2008, we'll all play better ball, and then back to match play in 2009. This way, we'll be doing what the pros do in a three-day weekend, over the course of three years. Our Solheim Cup competition requires that the challengers win the cup from the defenders. If the overall team competition results in a tie, the cup is retained by the defenders. After winning the inaugural cup in 2005, O.C. won in 2006. We needed to win 6-5 to take The Cup back, we couldn't just tie. There were 11 rounds played this year, so 11 points were up for grabs, but we lost 6-5, and were only one match short of a victory!L.A. golfers winning their matches included: Kathryn Jackson and Karen Katzbeck, Debbie Dakouzlian and Nancy Katayama, Natalie Zifcak and Barbara Trivison, Susan Watkins and TimiAnne Bourell, and Michelle Haag and Chris Devine Dailey. Congratulations to these winners, and better luck next year to the whole team. Please be sure to register early next year for these always-popular inter-chapter events.
Buenaventura: On July 23rd we took a break from the summer heat and played at Buenaventura, a newly-improved course in Ventura. While the inland and valley areas were in the high 80's and up to the mid-90's, EWGA was enjoying breezy weather in the 70's. 27 members and 2 guests enjoyed this beautiful but occasionally windy day. The course provided $8 vouchers to use at the turn, with the beverage cart or after golf, and most of the players stayed after golf to spend their vouchers on food & drinks and enjoy the weather and company. In addition to the two guests, we had three new members participate. Carol Fishburn won lowest putts (30), and Closest to the Pin was won by Linda Kueny on the front nine and Kathy Jackson on the back nine. Kathy also won the Longest Drive. The course was nice and the staff was pleasant, but some complaints were heard about yardage markers, primarily on the holes where the carts were not allowed, and it was hard to estimate the yardage from the path. Also, the lack of a proper driving range was a negative for some. Thanks to Maureen Kelly for organizing and hosting!

New Member Orientation Recap
Wednesday, July 11th
Hostess Maureen Kelly reports that there was a nice turnout for the Member Orientation at her home in Redondo Beach July 11th. 9 members and guests came for dinner. Expertise ran from good players to just started taking lessons. Maureen did an overview of the Association and the local Chapter, the sponsors, Nine is Enough! and the outings with the other chapters. Karen Krull had the computer working to show how to access information on the EWGA and EWGA-LA websites. She also talked about how to obtain and maintain a handicap. Maureen ended with the reminder that EWGA is a volunteer organization and all helpers are welcome.

Personal Notes
Sherry Netherland had fun playing at the 9-hole Par 3 Peter Hay Course located across from famed Pebble Beach.
The Book CLUB in your bag, by Karen Krull:
One of my favorite golf instructors told me last year that the hardest part of the golf game was 'the six-inch space between the ears.' At the time, this was a fair assessment of my game. One of the effective tools I recently found to help this part of the game is a book called 'Zen Golf' by Dr. Joseph Parent. It's a quick read and shows how to make one's mind an ally instead of an enemy. I found it at my local library, read it, and then bought my own copy.

League Updates
Wednesday Night at Whitsett
This League continues strong, with a nice turnout of 16 on July 11th. Welcome to the two new gals joining us, Marlo and Joann. Jean Rouda had a first for the Whitsett League. She chipped in on 2 holes in a row, one to save her par and one for a bogey. Good job, Jean. And Barbara Trivison made a nice putt from off the green to record the other chip in. Jennifer Tiner won the low score portion of our 70/30 split pot with a 33 and Miriam Begg won the most Honest Scorekeeper portion. Congrats to both of you! We are trying to start earlier, by 5:45, so that everyone can finish, so come early if you can.
July 25th, yells were heard from 2 holes away when guest Marlo Miller chipped in for birdie from the fairway to win last week's Chip In pool! This was her first birdie and her first chip-in. Congratulations and we hope this gets Marlo to officially join the EWGA L.A.!
Whitsett is a great course for learning, as it is a short, 9-hole par 3, so take advantage of it. If you are a new player and want to be paired with a more experienced player to better understand the rules and etiquette, just let Roberta know at: rokantola@gmail.com

California Cup
California Section EWGA Members! Come out and join the fun in Carmel/Monterey September 29th & 30th, 2007. We have a great weekend planned with activities and golf events suitable for all levels of golfers. Bring friends, spouses, significant others or anyone you know that wants to enjoy the beauty of the Monterey Peninsula and a weekend to remember. There are also several social events for any non-golfing guests who would like to join us as we celebrate the continuing growth of EWGA and Women's Golf in California.
The weekend event starts with a social activity on Friday evening, the Sponsor Expo at the Beach Resort Hotel. This activity provides an opportunity for all California Section members and guests to meet and network with the Section and Chapter leaders and members from all of the California Chapters; and, additionally, to meet and network with prospective sponsors. This activity will start at 6:30 pm and will include Hot Hors D'oeuvre and a No-Host bar.
The golf activities have been established to be inclusive of all skill levels of our members and guests. The cup tournament is match play patterned after the Solheim Cup using the same formats over the two days. The event will be held at Bayonet/Blackhorse Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday morning with an 8:00 am shotgun start scheduled for each day. Each Chapter can select up to twelve (12) members to represent them in this event. Each player will play to their respective September Index and their team captain will determine which member plays each format. Each team member is required to play both competitive rounds. On Saturday morning, the Alternate Shot and Team Best Ball formats will be played. On Sunday morning, all matches will be Singles. Each match, on both days, will be valued at one (1) point. The winner of a match will gain one (1) point for their respective Chapter. If the match ends in a draw, each Chapter will earn ½ point. The California Cup will be awarded to the Chapter that earns the most match points. The Tournament Committee will do the pairings for each match and will ensure that the handicap difference between competitors is minimized. It is expected that we will have up to 28 slots available in the shotgun start for members and guests who are not in the California Cup competition to play Bayonet/Blackhorse Golf Club during the competition rounds. This will enable individuals to play the same course as the competitors, but play stroke format or any other format desired within their foursome.
On Saturday, a "Fun Golf Event" has been planned at the Old Del Monte Golf Club for those members and guests who are not competing in the California Cup, but have come to Monterey for the golf and social networking opportunities with the other members and guests. We have planned to make this event a team activity, such as, a 1, 2, 3 Waltz or something similar with prizes for the winning team and for Closest to the Pin on par 3's. This event will have a sequential start with the first tee time at 10:00 am.On Saturday, box lunches will be provided to the golfers on both courses as part of the tournament fee. Carts are also provided at each course and range balls will be provided to the players at Bayonet/Blackhorse Golf Club (Old Del Monte does not have a driving range). In order to provide members with flexibility in selection of the events in which they wish to participate, the pricing has been bundled into a tournament package and a "fun golf" package. Additionally, the food has been separated so that non-golfing guests can participate in the social events.Tournament Competitor: $300.00 includes two rounds of golf at Bayonet/Blackhorse Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday mornings with cart, range balls and the Friday evening Sponsors Expo, Saturday evening BBQ buffet and the Sunday awards luncheon.
"Fun Golf" Participant: $190.00 includes one round of golf at Old Del Monte Golf Club on Saturday morning with cart and the Friday evening Sponsors Expo, Saturday evening BBQ buffet and the Sunday awards luncheon.
Non-tournament Golfer playing Bayonet/Blackhorse Golf Club as part of the tournament shotgun on both Saturday and Sunday: $300.00 and includes cart, range balls and the Friday evening Sponsors Expo, Saturday evening BBQ buffet and the Sunday awards luncheon.Non-tournament Golfer playing Bayonet/Blackhorse on either Saturday or Sunday as part of the shotgun, but without any of the social activities: $110.00 and includes the cart and range balls.

The team will compete in a full schedule in the Western State Conference and is currently looking for players. Oakmont Country Club is the team's home golf course.
