"For one Pac Am group, it's women only"
By Zack Hall / The Bulletin
Published: October 03. 2007 5:00AM PST
All but one of a group of 12 golfers left their spouses and families at home this week to play courses around Central Oregon. The group’s members all are sticklers for the rules of golf and take pride in their prowess on the 19th hole. One more thing — the group of golfers are all women, and they’re all over the age of 50.Members of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Executive Women’s Golf Association, along with a handful of EWGA members from other chapters, are playing at the 2007 Northwest Dodge Dealers Pacific Amateur Golf Classic in what has become an annual event for the group. For them, the tournament offers a chance for a girls’ outing — not unlike the guys’ outings they’ve seen their husbands and other men take for years.
“There is nothing against the family and kids and everybody else, but this is our girls’ night out,” said L.A. chapter president Debbie Dakouzlian of Long Beach, Calif., after the group’s round at Bend’s Widgi Creek Golf Club on Tuesday. “Men take off and go fishing, or camping or whatever. This, for us, is that equivalent.”
Sharon Wertz and Michelle Haag of Long Beach and Mary Ellen Knowles of Los Angeles were the first of the group to play in the annual Central Oregon amateur golf tournament five years ago.The three had become fed up with the World Amateur Handicap Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C., the world’s largest amateur tournament, boasting more than 4,000 golfers each year.“We wanted go somewhere different,” said Wertz, adding that Haag had first learned about the Pac Am in a golf magazine. “If the Myrtle Beach tournament had 5,000 people in it, 4,500 of them were men.”
Wertz said the Pac Am and Central Oregon courses have been particularly friendly to women golfers. And that has kept the group loyal to the tournament. Now three sisters — Sue Brugman of Manhattan Beach, Calif.,; TimmiAne Bourell of Hollister, Calif.; and Suzette Keyser of Jacksonville, Ark. — make the trip.Southern Californians Karen Katzbeck of Glendale, Chris Divine Dailey of Hermosa Beach, and Cecilia Worcester of West Hills, have joined the group in recent years.Michelle Allman of North Hollywood along with the group’s best golfer, Lori Baker — a 12 handicap from Temple City, Calif. — made the trip to play in the Pacific Amateur for the first time this year.
Most of the women, including some who are board members for the Los Angeles chapter of the EWGA, play together in nearly 30 tournaments a year. But for them, the trip to Central Oregon is a highlight of their golfing year. They’re even skipping the popular California Cup in Monterey this week to play in the Pac Am. Knowles, a tournament director for the EWGA, said she is happy to be freed from coordination responsibilities for a change.“I finally get to play,” she said. “And I don’t have to worry about it,”And the group is competitive.
Tuesday, chapter president Dakouzlian outdrove Allman by a foot in a long drive competition for Flight 33, something the players were more than willing to discuss.“(Allman) got closest to the pin yesterday,” Wertz said. “So it was only fair that Debbie got the longest drive today.” The competition is only a small part of what attracts the group, though. They share philosophies, be it a strict adherence to the rules (they loathe “gimme“ putts) or the desire to share a drink in the clubhouse after the round. For them, the Pac Am is a chance to share a common thread — a love of golf — with their friends. One thing about our group is that we all enjoy golf,” Wertz said. “It’s all about the camaraderie.” |

| MEMBERSHIP KICKOFF— 7 NEW MEMBERS JOIN! |
| |
Our 13 th Annual Membership Kickoff was held at Knollwood Country Club in Granada Hills, Saturday, April 21 st from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. This was a great chance to introduce our friends to EWGA Los Angeles, where they can meet other women golfers and take advantage of a wide array of member benefits from both local and association-wide sponsors. The morning featured a Fashion Show presented by Bellasport, a Golf Expo highlighting our sponsors and a sumptuous Breakfast Buffet.
Seven of the nine guests applied for membership at the event, qualifying for a drawing for a 25 ° hybrid club, which was won by Karen White. In addition to Karen, the new members included Hasmik Amerian, Miriam Begg, TeeTee Meyer, Jean Rouda, Irene Smith and Linda Zimmer. Please look for these ladies at future events and give them a warm welcome! There was also a drawing for a Free Premier EWGA Membership, with members getting one ticket for each guest they brought, won by Kathy Malmfeldt.
Anna Ott and her Bellasport team put on a lively fashion show, featuring member Teri Esteban and a husband and wife team, modeling golf/leisure wear and accessories. More items from Bellasport were on display at the Golf Expo, along with Cookie Lee Jewelry, Tartan Grips, Stryker Physiotherapy answering our questions about golf-related injuries and how to recover from them, and swing analysis from Golf-Tec. Golf Gym was unable to attend, but donated Squeezies for everyone, and 3 Personal PowerSwing sets for the raffle. The California Section Director Kris Poe attended, giving an EWGA regional perspective. There were many raffle and door prizes, and 3 foursomes played the course after the Kickoff.
Thanks to Co-Chairs Vickie Camper, Chris Devine Dailey, and Kathy Malmfeldt, and volunteers Roberta Kantola, Darlene Hayes, Jill West, Laura Perry, Barbara Trivison, Deb Buzick and Carol Fishburn for a fun morning! |

Santa Barbara Women's Open:
This two-day amateur competition features players from all over the state. Competition consisted of two days of 18 holes at Sandpiper and the Santa Barbara Golf Course. Many golf courses and clubs were represented, including EWGA Chapters from L.A., Sacramento, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs-Desert Cities and Orange County.
Our Chapter was represented by 7 participants: Linda Kueny in the Gold Flight (Handicaps 12.4-16.9), Judy Pachciarz, and Julie Armstrong in the Silver Flight (17.3-24.1) and Chris Devine-Dailey, Mary Ellen Knowles, Barbara Trivison and Karen Katzbeck in the Copper Flight (24.4-33). Linda won low net in the Gold Flight and Karen won low gross in the Copper Flight. Karen also managed closest to the pin twice, once at Sandpiper and once at Santa Barbara Golf Club.
Everyone had a great time...in spite of the smoke and ash from the nearby forest fire, especially on Thursday when it was dark all day...the sun was orange and it "snowed" all day. The cars were covered with ash both mornings when the players woke up and they had to brush the ash out of their hair and clothing after finishing on Thursday. Judy P. brought her dogs Nickie & Abby along for the trip, and everyone got to meet them after the tournament. Mary Ellen got to play, over the course of the 2 days, with all the winners in the Copper flight - Low Gross and five Low Net winners, but she said apparently none of their technique "rubbed off"!!:) Well done, ladies! Thanks to all who participated and special kudos to Linda & Karen. Complete results can be found on the Santa Barbara Women's Open Website, and photos will be posted on our web site soon. |

The Third Annual LA Diego Cup:
was held Saturday, September 8th, at Tijeras Creek Golf Course in Rancho Santa Margarita. The San Diego Chapter sent 18 players who competed against 18 players from Los Angeles, with San Diego taking home the win and the trophy, with a score of 85.5 to 78.5. The event format was modified match play in which each foursome consisted of a pair of SD players competing against a pair of LA players, with each person playing her own ball. There were 18 total points per foursome, and the pair whose player had the best score won that hole and one point. Thus the total available score was 164 (9 rounds x 18 points) in 2007. LA won the first two events by scores of 99.5 to 98.5 in 2005, and by 86.5 to 75.5 in 2006. Please join us in September 2008, and help us win back the trophy! |
